JB Music Studio

JB Music Studio in American Fork, UT is the studio of musician, violinist, guitarist, composer, conductor, and educator Jared B. Waugh.

Early Days

JB grew up in a home that was full of joyful singing and dancing and music was often being played on the record player. One of his earliest memories was listening to music after eating lunch and getting peanut butter all over one of his mom’s records when he lifted the needle to play one of the songs again. His mom was not too pleased with the mess!

JB first put bow to string at age 5 when his mom finally gave in to his persistent requests for violin and piano lessons. His mother said that little Jared obviously had his mind set on making music as he had been asking for a couple of years already. Jared loved the violin so much that he wouldn’t let his violin out of his sight. He would even bring his violin to bed with him at night.

JB first picked up a guitar around age 9 in his grandma’s garage in So Cal. Read more about that guitar story…

Education

JB’s music studies included lessons from Hiroko Primrose, Pat Grover, Clyn Barrus at BYU, and John Chatelain of the Utah Symphony. JB furthered his studies as an adult at Utah Valley State College and Portland State University where he was concertmaster of each symphony and a scholarship student. His favorite master class experiences were with Jorja Fleezanis (then Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra), and baroque violin specialist Monica Huggett.

JB credits a large portion of what he knows about music to many years of listening to music, reading about music, going to hear performances by music artists, and his own music-making pursuits. He worked for a number of years at record stores as well as a prominent musical instrument store in Portland, OR. One of the benefits of those jobs was getting into all kinds of concerts and music events where he was able to meet and rub elbows with many wonderful musicians. It proved to be a veritable music education in and of itself.

Performing & Teaching

JB has been performing music ever since his second violin recital. Ask me to tell you the story sometime about my first recital.

JB has been teaching music since the 80’s when he undertook several years of annual pedagogy training whilst in his teenage years.

Before, during, and after university, JB performed music professionally in Portland and throughout the Northwest. While living in Portland, JB joined the American Federation of Musicians (the musician’s union) and worked as a violinist in the Vancouver Symphony, Columbia Symphony, Portland Chamber Orchestra, some other classical ensembles, and also with various bands. He was brought on at Linfield College to sit side-by-side with college students as a player/mentor/coach in their orchestra.

JB also taught private and group violin and viola lessons as a performing-artist instructor on the faculty of Portland’s Community Music Center. Additionally, he taught orchestra at Stoller Middle School before accepting a position directing the orchestra program at a prestigious private K-12. After moving to Utah, JB continued his private teaching and conducted and coached after-school youth symphony groups as well.
